It is a variation of the standard card game of poker. The game consists of two cards being dealt face down to each player and then five community cards being placed by the dealer—a series of three ("the flop") then two additional single cards ("the turn" and "the river"), with players having the option to check, bet or fold after each deal, i.e. betting may occur prior to the flop, "on the flop," "on the turn," and "on the river."

Play begins with each player being dealt two cards face down, with the player in the small blind receiving the first card and the player in the button seat receiving the last card dealt. .These cards are the player's hole or pocket cards. These are the only cards each player will receive individually, and they will only (possibly) be revealed at the showdown, making Texas hold 'em a closed poker game.

The dealer gets 5 cards, with one card facing up. The player then examines his hand and decides to fold(forfeiting the ante), or to make an additional bet by doubling his ante. Whoever has the higher hand wins.

3 card draw poker is an American version of a British game called Brag. The dealer gives each player 3 cards and himself 3 cards. All cards are dealt face down and then the player may examine his cards. The player may then either fold or bet. If the player folds then he forfeits his ante wager and if the player raises then he must make an additional play bet exactly equal to his ante bet. Whoever has the higher hand wins.
